Tourist locked in washroom is set free by Jeff Bell

Chemainus has redefined the “tourist trap” — as one unfortunate visitor to the scenic Island community found out this week.

RCMP Const. Dave Hay of South Island Traffic Services said he got the most unusual call of his career Thursday from a resident of the Lower Mainland, who claimed that a relative was trapped in a public washroom in Waterwheel Park.

It turned out the trapped man had manged to place a cellphone call to the mainland from his porcelain prison and tell his loved one that a quick visit to the washroom had somehow turned into a strange ordeal.

The resourceful relative got a hold of Hay by looking up “RCMP” Chemainus” on Google.

“Seems the staff at Waterwheel Park…had slammed the steel bars shut across the restroom doors, believing the facility to be empty,” Hay said.

A quick phone call from Hay to the right people and the visitor was set free.
