Photo from the book Toilets of the World by Morna E. Gregory and Sian James. Pop-up urinal at night in central London, England.

Throughout the week, unsuspecting crowds in this corner of central London walk over what appears to be an oversized concrete manhole cover. On Thursdays at dusk the cover rises up from the ground to reveal a three-man urinal. Those finding themselves atop this hidden convenience needn’t worry; a city worker is there to activate the facility by remote control. Catering to the male half of Soho’s weekend nightlife, this part-time public relief station is one answer to the sanitary concerns faced by large cities.
